Scans of Black and White Negatives Result in High Contrast Images

You scan a black and white negative expecting

Color patches and grayscale on B&W negative

but instead get an extremely high contrast image:

Color patches and grayscale on B&W negative using ICE

Cause: ICE will not function with emulsions that retain silver (black and white film).

Remedy: Turn off ICE.

Comment: This is such an unambiguous user error that you'd think NikonScan should at least display a warning message.
